Chapter Thirteen

What went before... Nine Years Ago

His name was Jacques Moreau. I’d paid a small fortune to a French private investigator to find out what had really happened, thinking it would bring me peace. It hadn’t. Instead, it brought rage and a slow-smoldering plan for vengeance.

Moreau had played my sister and her killer against each other, using both to bolster his pathetic ego, to amuse him with their jealous antics. And when his mistress couldn’t take it anymore, she didn’t go after him. No, she went after Bianca. Harmless Bianca who wouldn’t hurt a fly.

I’d read the police reports, thought I’d braced myself for what had been done to my sister, but nothing prepared me for the sight of her, broken and bleeding on dirty Paris cobblestones, her eyes open and sightless.

The bitch had slit her throat and pushed her out the window. Then she’d jumped herself, unable to live with what she’d done.

And Jacques Moreau? He walked away as if he’d never known either woman.

Now...

I looked at myself hard in the mirror. We were alone in this room again, a room made for lovers. We had nothing to do but wait...until either the bad guy made a move, or we received information from either of our contacts to move the investigation forward. So what would be the harm in a little recreational sex? Both of us knew that was all it would be, and both of us knew we wanted the other. This morning’s little escapade over breakfast had made that pretty damned evident.

I could waffle about it all I wanted, but I knew tonight neither of us would be using the settee. Not unless something happened with the case that precluded a romp, and if that happened, it’d be divine intervention. A sign from God. Yeah right.

With that decision made, I freshened my makeup just enough to look casually natural and handed the bathroom over to Jonah as I unpacked, leaving just my grab-and-go bag ready for a quick departure. Grab-and-go bags were a necessity in my line of work—just enough clothing, shampoo and girly stuff to get me onto a plane without checked luggage, and without pissing other passengers off. Going through airport protocols with my weapon was trouble enough, thank you very much.

When Jonah emerged from the bathroom, he looked good enough to eat. Bastard. Then his gaze locked with mine and went hot. He’d come to the same decision I had. Nice to know we were on the same page.

I swallowed, hard, and the look he sent me was one of pure male triumph. I glanced reflexively out the window. Hours yet until dark. Anticipation began to build within me, a sweet, almost violent hum that curled from my toes to the base of my skull.

I smiled and saw his cat-got-the-canary grin falter for a long moment, then his Adam’s apple bobbed as he reflexively gulped as well.

Yeah, if I was gonna suffer, then so was he. A lot.

Anderson and Simonson were waiting for us in the “conference” room.
